COSTA MESA, Calif. (October 27, 2008) - Lucky Craft president and avid fisherman, Minoru Segawa, had never been to Mexico until a few weeks ago. Along with California resident and Lucky Craft pro staff member, Skeet Reese, Segawa took in the sights of Puerto Vallarta.
Reese had wanted to take Segawa big game fishing for a long time, and the opportunity finally arrived. Wanting to show his appreciation for his sponsorship and the support throughout the years, Reese set up the trip, which included a mix of business and pleasure.
"We had a dealer come down so we did some business one day," Reese said. "We talked about new products, got to design some new baits and then we went fishing. Minoru [Segawa] had never been tuna or marlin fishing, so I was really looking forward to that part of the trip."

Fishing was slow, but that didn't slow down this duo. After trolling lures and live bait for a while, they stopped over a live reef and incorporated a technique called "chunking" into the mix. Reese had never used this technique before, but it seemed to work as Segawa caught his first yellowfin tuna.
"I was hoping the big tuna would be 200 to 300 pounds, but we never found them," Reese said. "We found some 40-to 70-pound fish, and those seemed to be plenty big. Watching Minoru catch his first tuna ever was actually pretty comical. He hooked him and got tired as he was fighting, so he [Segawa] tried to pass the rod off to the deckhand. I jumped all over him, yelling at him to take that rod back. I've never seen him move so fast."
After 30 minutes of fighting, Segawa landed the fish. According to Reese, Segawa was glad he kept going and satisfaction was written all over his face.
While the first day was eventful with tuna, the last day was even more so. Segawa had the opportunity to catch a fish he has dreamed about for years ... a roosterfish.
After spending the last day offshore with no action, they stopped on a shallow reef. Reese had no idea Segawa's dream was to catch one of these ocean dwellers, but he soon realized the magnitude of the situation.
"I had a light rod down there with me, so we threw it out and Minoru [Segawa] hooked a roosterfish that was probably 35 to 40 pounds," Reese said. "He landed it and was so pumped. To see the excitement and joy on his face was pretty incredible."

In addition to the fishing, Segawa and Reese took in the sites and tastes of Puerto Vallarta. They experienced the culture and visited a favorite restaurant of the Reese clan.
It seems some research and development was going on behind the scenes, as well. After fishing for the offshore giants, Segawa's head was spinning with ideas and opportunities to design new, innovative baits.
"He was on the boat making rough drawings and writing templates on how to make lures," Reese added. "My guess is there will be new Lucky Craft baits for saltwater before too long."
Reese said Segawa's trip was one he'll always remember and quoted Segawa as they left Mexico as saying "It was the best trip of my life."
