After a turkey hunt in Michigan with Kevin VanDan, Mike Auten (right) was back in the office to work out new distribution for Classic Patterns TV.

Auten Talks Turkey 6/1/2005

Mike Auten didn't qualify for the Bassmaster Elite 50s, but he still has plenty to keep him busy until the 2006 Bassmaster season.

He spent last week in pursuit of Michigan gobblers with Kevin VanDam. In addition to his personal time in the Wolverine state, he edited a show which featured fellow Lucky Craft pro Kelly Jordon, and negotiated a breakthrough in distribution for Classic Patterns television.

Gobblers Down

Although Kentucky is Auten's home, and full of turkeys, he ventured north to spend time with VanDam and bag a few birds.

"I finally made it to Michigan to hunt turkeys," he said. "I've wanted to do this for a while. I went with Kevin and had a great time. My schedule is so full with television production and post-production that I sometimes don't get a break.

"Both of us bagged birds," he said. "I'd say we had a very successful hunt. We both limited out."

BDS Debut

Auten's pumped up about the release of the new Lucky Craft BDS 2.

"The shallow-water crankbait fans will be thrilled about the release of the new BDS 2," he said. "It's similar to the super-productive RC 1.5, but slightly different with a thinner lip. The shallow crankers are going to be extremely happy with it.

"What I really like about the entire BDS lineup is how you can use it as a power tool," he said. "The BDS is going to be mega-productive in this role. This lure is fishable with real heavy line. In fact, all of the BDS lineup can be fished on heavy line. So many of the other shallow runners won't perform properly on heavy line, but the BDS series will. With the BDS series, you can spool with some real rope and get the job done."

(Editor's note: Russ Meyer won the recent Bassmaster Delta Western Open. One of his key baits was a BDS 4 in red crawdad fished on 20-pound line.)

Patterns Expands

Auten's Classic Patterns show is currently on the Outdoor Channel and available to the various satellite carriers throughout the country. If things go as planned, distribution will expand rapidly for his program.

"I can't really go into specifics, but Classic Patterns should be available very soon to most cable systems," he said. "We're almost done with the details of the agreement and will have a press release out soon. Suffice it to say, it'll be positioned so the show will have a large reach nationally."

Notable

> Next week, Auten's off to the Skeeter Boats Owners tournament in Texas.

> Look for a new episode of Classic Patterns which features Lucky Craft pro Kelly Jordon on Lake Fork. "We just completed the edit on a terrific episode of a show with Kelly," he said. "It's a real good one with lots of fish."
